The Michigan DNR (http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/) has confirmed that the large fish recently extracted from Lake Lavine in Branch County is in fact a Piranha. The DNR was called to North Oak Lane, on the north bank of Lake Lavine, on a the report of an angler catching a Piranha. Michigan DNR officer, Ross Ryan, responded and confirmed the fish to be a piranha and took the fish to the University of Michigan for further study. Dr. Ed Bass, from the Fish and Wild Life Institute at the university confirmed the identity of the fish and warned residents that piranhas are known to swim in large schools and attach their prey as a group. By a local fisherman's description of the size of the school of fish seen on his fish finder, it is believed there are several hundred piranhas in the lake. The DNR is investigating how the fish established themselves in the lake.

Piranhas prefer to attack in less than three feet of water , so DNR officers are trying to doing the best to warn residents of the danger. Watch for children swimming off the shoreline with extra caution as the Fourth of July festivities will make it prime hunting opportunity for the fish. Please if you see any Piranhas don't attempt to catch them. Call your local DNR office and report their location. Thank you for your cooperation and have a safe holiday weekend.
