A study released this week has shown that liberals and left-leaning adults tend to accept falsely reported news as truth that supports their political leanings over news that does not support leftist ideologies but is based in complete fact. Meanwhile, their counterparts, right leaning adults, react in the complete opposite manner and prefer fact over fiction.
According to Dr. Stephen Falken, PhD. of Harvard University, a study was conducted with 5,000 adults between the ages of 18 and 80 where they were to read and assess 10 to 20 news articles per day. Once completed, the pre-selected groups would meet in smaller groups of 10 people of the same political leanings to discuss the articles.
"The findings were surprising", said Dr. Falken. "The left-leaning groups gravitated to all provided new articles, whether real or fictional, as long as they met 2 primary criteria. The first being that the article had to show favorably to their ideology, and the second that it had to place their counterpoint ideology in a poor light", He went on to say, "Once these criteria were met, the stories validity was no longer important and the group would share this "news" with the control group that read no news as though it were fact, regardless of the source".
To contrast this, the results for the right-leaning groups were starkly different. According to Dr. Falken, "Regardless of fact or fiction, regardless of good or bad news, the right leaning group tended to deliver "news" to the control group in a more analytical way and would discuss the news seeking to disprove or affirm the articles before accepting them as true".
On the surface, the results seem to indicate that right-leaning ideologues are more analytical or prefer to verify prior to verify information prior to disseminating it. Dr. Norma Cenvra, PhD, of Johns Hopkins Behavior Health Department agrees.
"What this research shows it that truth does, in fact, matter, but only to a portion of the population". She continues, "The desire to blindly accept any printed "truth" presented to a person simply because it is favorable to their beliefs is disturbing and could be symptomatic of a much larger mental health issue". In other words, it seems that there may be a correlation between leftist ideologies and mental illness according to this study. When presented with this question, Dr. Cenvra simply answered "Yes".
Dr. Falken added, "This study shows the nature of group thought and social hierarchy in the groupthink mentality. Where the right-leaning, more conservative group treated each other civilly and more like equals in discussing the information, the left-leaning group tended to attack those in the group who didn't agree with the presented news and badgered them into submission until they agreed with the group. Interestingly, within 20 to 30 minutes the dissenter was also sharing the information as fact even when based completely in falsehood".
What does a study like this imply? This is difficult to ascertain at this moment. But one thing is certain, your left-leaning friends, family, and colleagues are more likely to be dishonest with you, whether intentional or not because they may very possibly believe anything they read.
