There has been a huge increase in the rabid racoon population in one Southern Jersey area. Haddon Heights N.J. has seen an overwhelming increase of raccoons with rabies. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. The early symptoms of rabies in people are similar to that of many other illnesses, including fever, headache, and general weakness or discomfort.
The CDC of Southern New Jersey warns residents of the Haddon Heights area to stay clear of any and all raccoons. "The animals rarely are seen in the day but can come out to look for food and that is when they attack humans" says CDC offical,
Dr. B.C. ENYAP (Rabies specialist). 10 people in the Heights area have been diagnosed with the deadly virus. 3 have died.
