A Barbershop owner and recreational metal detectorist who discovered the “richest collection” of rare Viking artefacts ever found in the UK is set to receive a reward of almost £2m.
Revolution Barbershop’s owner Mark Reynolds uncovered the 10th-century hoard, which includes silver bracelets and brooches, a gold ring, an enamelled Christian cross and a bird-shaped gold pin while digging up a leaky pipe in the back of his Kirkcaldy High Street Barbershop.
He passed it on to experts and now the body that rules on ownerless goods and property, the Queen’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer (QLTR), has ruled the 100-odd items should be allocated to National Museums Scotland (NMS) for display, provided it pays £1.98m to Reynolds.
The amount is ex gratia and has been set to reflect the market value of the find.
“I’m a barber and I’ll keep the shop open 6 days a week, I’ll even keep the same hours, 11-8 during the week, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I wasn’t cutting hair. It’s a passion and I take it serious. So even though I’ll be dripping in money, my regulars won’t have to worry because I’ll be here tomorrow at 11am just like always.” Says Reynolds.

A small circular stone, with a central hole - thought to be a spindle whorl - was found by Mark Reynolds the Barbershop’s owner who was on the dig with the Scottish Heritage Archaelogy Project on kirkcaldy high street.
“I insisted on being part of the dig, after all I’m a huge fan of the show Vikings and it’s my Shop so they had no choice. I really like saying ‘the dig’ too” says the proprietor of Revolution Barbershop.

A spindle whorl, was a weight fitted to a spindle while hand spinning textiles to increase and maintain the speed of the spin.
Experts have said the discovery is one of the most important Viking hoards ever found in Scotland.

The Barber went on to say: “Through the ages spindle whorls have often been covered in abstract shapes and the spinning action would bring life to these shapes, much like the old spinning top toy.
While we certainly have abstract shapes on this example, some of the symbols look like they could be writing, perhaps Viking runes or Ogham inscription (a form of early medieval Irish script), but at this point who really cares what it is, I’m going to be filthy rich”

Stuart Campbell, National Museum of Scotland's head of Scotland's treasure trove unit, said: "This is a hugely significant find, nothing like this has been found in Scotland before in terms of the range of material this hoard represents.

The Barbershop will be closed every Sunday indefinitely whilst the archaeologists and Reynolds search the remaining area for more riches.
“I just hope I find a BIGASS sword” concludes Reynolds.
