In a special three-part episode, the upcoming 12th season of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" will include a full riffing of the three-hour 1985 Akira Kurosawa film, "Ran." Based on Shakespeare's "King Lear," this acknowledged classic may seem an odd choice for the Netflix show that prides itself on poking fun at "cheesy movies, the worst [they] can find." However, Joel Hodgson, MST3K's creator, has expressed a desire to broaden the show's horizons. "If can we successfully riff 'Ran,' we can riff anything," said Hodgson. The show's writing team is currently working on riffs for the movie, which include a Country & Western song performed by the court jester character.
