Chesterfield County, Virginia --Amid a brewing budget crisis, Chesterfield County may be the first in the state to abolish its atheletic programs according to Superintendent James Lane. "Schools and sports go hand-in-hand, and while this makes me very sad, we just cannot continue to support our athletic programs with the budget that is being considerred by the Board of Supervisors", said Lane. Chesterfield County Public Schools is facing a deficit of over a billion dollars and the county has said it will make deep cuts if necessary to make up the difference. Among the first to go, will be extracurricular activities offered by the schools, including middle and high school sports. "While everyone loves to cheer on they're local sports teams, no one really understands how much it costs to run those programs," said the county atheletic director. "If the Board of Supervisors passes the budget as it's written, the county will have no choice but to cancel all of their atheletic programs next year."
We reached out to the members of the Board of Supervisors for a comment on this new proposal but haven't gotten as response as of yet. We will keep you updated as this story progresses.
