Have you ever been shown a viral video on YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter by someone you know? Have you ever thought about making one yourself? Here in our small town, one teen decided to, and now makes a living off of it. Local teen Clayton Huddleston has grown quite a large following on the Internet. What seemed to be a small passion for creating Internet videos and posting them to YouTube has turned into a full on career, and has him on a journey that's taken him around the world, despite only being 18. Popularity on the Internet has grown immensely over this coming decade, and with immense growth comes a substantial way to make huge money, fast. With this new trend of Internet video makers, or "YouTuber's" as they like to be called; there are often parody accounts that attempt to manipulate their fans into following or subscribing to the false account in order to grow a following. Social media sites like that of Twitter and Instagram have taken measures to combat these parody accounts by adding a blue symbol of authenticity next to the accounts name, otherwise known as "Account Verification". This method of maintaining authenticity works for the most part, but is quite difficult to obtain a stature worthy of being "verified" by whichever site you may be using. Twitter claims that "followers have no impact on account verification, and users should be wary that even though an account may have a large following, it may not be authentic." This creates a problem for some, like Clayton, who've gained a massive following, but cannot seem to meet Twitter's standards. Clayton currently sits at over 250,000 Twitter followers and over 210,000 YouTube subscribers, making him one of the largest Internet Stars in Indiana with a combined following of over 500,000. If you've seen Clayton's Twitter account, he's maintained himself as an online comedian of sorts, with an almost cult following. Yet, even though he has impersonators and a following this large, he still doesn't seem to meet the criteria for his account to be authentic, which draws the question, "What do you have to do in order to be verified?" It's quite simple. but it's quite not. You normally have to be a politician, musician, reporter, journalist, or any general type of high ranking official that meets public interest and can be parodied. It may not seem to be a big deal to us normal folk, but for anyone in Clayton's position, it's something entirely different. "It really isn't just a check mark, it's a lifestyle" said Huddleston in my phone call with him earlier this week. "All of my friend's have it, you're going to get it, so is the Pharaoh's Tribune, and I'm going to feel left out again. It really does hurt knowing that I'm kind of bullied by Twitter and my friend's, knowing that they have it and I don't. Heartbreaking really." Said Clayton. I myself submit the Pharaoh's Tribune main Twitter account as well as my personal account with the help of Clayton, and hopefully we'll be the first Logansport native's to achieve such an online honor, but with this, only time will tell.
