Callum Rae avoided a jail term but has been placed on the sex offenders register after " meeting up with a underage child for sex"

The 17 year old had been persuaded into meeting the "girl"who was someone using a fake profile and a false name and “trying to disguise their voice as a 15-year-old might sound” .

Mr Rae maintained he had no sexual interest in children and this was a “one-off experiment”, Dundee Sherif Court heard on Friday.


As they discussed meeting, the bogus child suggested he was too young and was a 17-year-old virgin.
Mr Rae decided to meet near a swimming centre on June 22 last year, said prosecutor Robin Turton.

The correspondent finally revealed himself at the dundee sherif court , Callum agreed to accompany him to the police station.

He told officers he thought it was a joke or a prank.

He later pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, his first sexual offence.

Duncan McReddie, defending, said: “It needs to be stated explicitly that Callum Rae is not a paedophile.

"He does not have a sexual interest in children.

“All his devices were taken from him. They’ve all been checked and there is no evidence of any sexual interest in children.”

He said Callum was candid about his use of the website - used by people to arrange sex - to contact other children.

“It’s perhaps fair to characterise Mr Rae as sexually adventurous,” added Mr McReddie.

“On this occasion he failed to observe the boundaries of that adventure when he should’ve done.

“There was no actual grooming of a child. There was grooming of a false identity placed in his path by somebody with a particular agenda.

“Had it not been for that, it’s highly debatable whether Callum Rae would have made any contact with any person underage.

“That’s not what he was seeking.”

He said a tape-recorded conversation showed a “comic element” to the case, with the other person “trying to disguise their voice as a 15-year-old might sound.

Judge Sean Morris said this was a lesson that anyone interested in such activity would end up in court and on the sex offenders’ register, “with all the humiliation that entails”.

He told mr Rae “Had this been a real child, and you had actually met up with a child, there would be no question you would be going away.

“Had there been any suggestion that you had interest in children on your computers or phone, you’d be going away.”

Instead, he said, they revealed “not a single hint” of such interest.

“It appears this was a wholly unacceptable one-off experiment.
