A tampa man spent the early morning of Saturday, October 29th, 2016 behind cornerstone pub in Tampa, Florida looking for a place to sleep for the night. Mike Hernandez, 48, had been drinking most of the evening and decided to sleep it off after losing his keys to his truck. He found refuse in the trash compactor which he thought was just a cardboard recycling dumpster. As he lay there sleeping through the night, at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning a large truck used for recycling came and picked up the dumpster not knowing mr. Hernandez was still inside. The dumpster was loaded into the larger vehicle operated by the county of Hillsborough County. Mr. Hernandez found himself inside the larger truck and was taken for a ride to the local recycling center in Duncan with approximately 400 tons of plastic, glass, shredded paper and other recyclable material. He was unable to escape from the depth of the trash for almost 12 hours. As he lay there waiting to be rescued after hours of screaming and yelling to gain someone's attention, mr. Hernandez found hm within that trash. When asked how he had survived for so long, mr. Hernandez said he had found an unopened bottle of Fireball, and a unopened six pack of Milwaukee's best. Mr. Hernandez was taken to the local hospital when found by workers who happened to be working that weekend and was treated at the hospital for dehydration and the breath of a drunk cinnamon stick. Mr. Hernandez was not available for further comment.
