Jim Mattocks, owner and operator of Jim Mattocks Repair in Guymon, Oklahoma, was honored with the Most Interesting Fisherman Award at the 16th Annual National Fisherman Association Convention in Tampa Bay, Florida this past weekend. According to the NFA Chairman, Erick Johnston, Mattocks was 1 of 2,147 candidates who were nominated by other fisherman across the nation. Johnston was quoted saying, "Not only did Jim Mattocks received the most nominations hands down, but the stories about him were spectacular!" Johnston continues by say that one nomination submitted by a close friend of Mattocks described an incident when Jim simply stared into the water. The fish, intimidated by the look in his eyes, began jumping into the boat in fear of what Mattocks would do to them if they weren't caught." We were unable to reach Mattocks for comment, but we did talk to many of his family and friends who were able to tell us more qualities that made Mattocks a worthy recipient of the award. Son-in-law and school teacher at Texhoma schools, Ty McBride, describes an event while fishing with Mattocks and Mattocks' grandson. Mattocks' grandson was struggling to catch a fish the entire trip, so Mattocks, unnoticed by all, hooked a fish, maneuvered and hooked that fish to his grandson's line, then got the fish to remove his own hook. McBride said, "To this day his grandson still has no idea that happened!" Tyler Mattocks, son of Jim Mattocks, was overwhelmed with emotions when he received the news of his father's achievement. Tyler Mattocks claimed that he has always been proud of his father stating, "It's an honor to be the son of such an incredibly talented man. I know that any challenge I face in my life will be easy to overcome because of the genetics he has shared with me"
