One UK school has finally decided to place a ban on homework for every student. Sedgefield Community College, County Durham, made the following statement on Monday:
"As teachers, we get to work closely with pupils of a variety of ages. One thing that we feel is abundantly clear is the increasing levels of stress and anxiety among pupils, especially those with exams nearing. It is because of this that we have made the decision to neglect homework, and instead, set simple revisions tasks. These tasks will no be compulsory, but we will ensure that our students feel that it is beneficial to their education."
What does this really prove? Are the teachers genuinely concerned for the mental wellbeing of students, or are they aiming to dramatically reduce the size of their marking piles?
