From guitarists to harpists and violinists to bassists, there are those among stringed instrument players who have an unnatural love of animals. It has been reported that some are known to daily strum, pluck, finger, rosin and bow various animal parts during the course of music making. The animal parts used include animal (commonly sheep) intestines and horse mane/tail hairs.

Other stringed players opt to be entirely vegan musicians, using only materials that are not derived from animals. Among them, they agree however, that they will only use bow hair from horses who are able to live free-range lifestyles, and who agreeably consent to the taking of their hairs.
