Owners Thomas Luthel and Virginia Flanks of Bass' Resort celebrate breaking ground at the site for the planned Fairview Ridge Lodges, an extension of the popular float-trip destination's cabin rental properties. Local residents threatened to protest the couple's plans to use the land, insisting that it can only bring misfortune. Historical records indicate that the land was once a Native American burial ground. This is disputed as several landmarks were lost during the flood of 1810, the same flood that claimed 67 souls around the property. In 1903 the site was the grounds for the Fiarbanks Home for the Insane which was lost to fire in 1942. During this period, the residents claimed to be tormented by spirits but it was disregarded as a symptom of their hysteria. The land had remained vacant since and was only recently purchased at auction by Mr Luthel. When asked to comment on the rumors, Mr Luthel indicated that any prior history was none of his concern.
