Illinois To Start Collecting Pet Tax

CHICAGO, IL. — Residents in Illinois will have to start listing their pets as personal property so the state can collect a tax.
The tax – $10 if a pet has been spayed or neutered, $75 if it is unaltered – only applies to Illinois residents who own cats and dogs four months and older.
Maria Pappas, Cook County's treasurer, says that this tax will be collected by the county's Department of Animal Control.
"Each county will be responsible for having every citizen who owns a taxable animal accounted for," Pappas said. "It is our goal to collect 100 percent of all taxes every year."
Animal Control will be sending out bills each month once everyone has been registered with an animal, Pappas said there is no way of knowing exactly how much money each county will generate by enforcing the tax.
Previously, there was no way knowing who had a dog or cat if it wasn't registered or had not been to a veterinarian for vaccinations.
Residents have until July 1st, 2018 to list their animals for tax purposes.
Pappas stated, "We think this tax will bring in a lot more revenue for the state to help out the crisis it is currently in."
