Andy Neale from Preston, England, had a significant Lotto win in 2015. Since then, he has dedicated his time to volunteering; including helping to launch Lancashire-based Social Enterprise, globalamigos.org.uk; now shortlisted for the prestigious award. The scope of work covered by the volunteer-led project include underground events that cater to Lancashire's LGBT community (Dirrty Harry's) a UK-wide hate crime signposting website (After Hate) and a city centre magazine that focuses on only the good in his hometown (Podio PR1 Magazine) It is also believed that the group are responsible for throwing a major city centre after show for the Lancashire Festival on July 22nd.

He told breakingnews247 that his aim with Global Amigos is, “to promote the concept that business should be used as a tool for good”.

What did the London graduate initially spend the pay-out on? A five star spa break in Lanzarote of course, before embarking on a placement in Latin America from September 2015 until April 2016. During the volunteer placement, he traveled; spending Christmas on a Caribbean island eating lobster & NYE in Costa Rica. His partner also flew out to join him for the New Year celebrations and they enjoyed a family holiday in the Canaries on his return to the UK.

He says that’s as extravagant as he’s been; he’s since settled back in to life in the North West where he continues to volunteer full time at the enterprise he’s building with his partner & the project co-ordinators & other contributors. "I'll need to return to work at some point, in the meantime, I'm loving what I'm doing & wish I could spend all my life volunteering"

It is the magazine which he edits which has last week been shortlisted for the SelNet award for Social Enterprise of the Year.

In addition to Global Amigos he voluntarily sits on the committee for Preston Pride; an LGBT celebratory event which saw its Chair step down last year & replaced by one of the city's activists, Debs Bradshaw. Around the same time, they were informed that the Council couldn't fund 2017's event and so Andy & the Board are working to develop long term and mutually beneficial business partnerships.

Last month, Dirrty Harry's announced a profit share from ticket sales starting from their most recent event (their next is an 'Easter Blow Out' on Saturday April 15th)

Next on his list is volunteering in the slums in India, working with grassroots charity, Chennai Challenge at an orphanage. Donations to the charity are welcomed via Andy's JustGiving page (www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Andy-Neale-India). Alternatively, our readers are invited to text the word ‘LYFE89’ followed by the desired donation amount (£2, £5 or £10) to 70070.

Andy is currently trying anything he can to raise awareness of his upcoming India placement; in a bid to encourage volunteerism & raise funds. This includes 'pimping his services out - if you've enjoyed what you've read and want to donate or discuss what he can do for you, in exchange for a sponsor/donation, email him directly: [email protected].
