An African lion has been confirmed in the Big Thicket National Forest and surrounding areas.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Mike Ehrmantraut confirmed Monday, April 10, 2017 that an African lion is loose and extremely dangerous in the Big Thicket National Preserve.

A hiker and two bicyclists first reported seeing the African lion on February 17, 2017. There have been numerous reports from hikers and bicyclists since the initial siting. Area farmers have also reported live stock missing or discovered mutilated. On April 9 a group of equestrians were riding their horses on the trails when one of the horses was attacked and killed. The rider was injured and transported to an area hospital where she was treated for severe lacerations.

Authorities believe the lion was purchased as a baby on the black market as a pet. They believe when the lion became sexually mature he also became aggressive and was released into the heavily forested area near Kountze, Texas.

The U.S. Zoological Association is working closely with local Texas Parks and Wildlife officials to locate the animal.
