On February 2nd, 1996 a 14 year-old boy by the name of Barry Loukaitis walked into his algebra class in Moses Lake, Washington and began firing. In this shooting, he killed his teacher, two classmates, and wounded another. Media coverage gave attention to his clothes and the color of them, and the weapons he used. What was given the most attention, however was the quote he used from the Stephen King novel Rage, in which Barry repeatedly said “This sure beats the hell out of algebra, doesn't it?” The way in which the media framed him made him out to be an anti-hero, and he became some sort of cultural icon. Soon after this shooting, on February 19, another shooting happened. Another on March 11th, and another following that two days later. Amongst some of the similarities between these shootings, such as the similar motive of infamy, more than one of these shooters also quoted Stephen Kings’ novel.
