In a shocking interview with Roger Ebert today, Steven Spielberg talked candidly about the fan theory that all of the central characters in all of his movies is meant to be a different version of Scott Calvin from "The Santa Claus."
"What surprises me is that more people haven't picked up on it," he said. "I've made it pretty clear to those who are paying attention. Indiana Jones, Dr. Ian Malcolm, Tom Cruise's character in "War of the Worlds"...that guy's name escapes me at the moment, but yeah, all of them are meant to be a different iteration of Scott Calvin. My movies are really meant to be seen as an elaborate interwoven web of stories all set in the same universe, where Scott Calvin is repeatedly being forced to take on the lives of those he accidentally kills just before the movie begins. In fact, the reason Oskar Schindler saved so many people during the Holocaust was because he was driven by the guilt of having accidentally killed the real Oskar Schindler and taking over his role. There were a lot of wacky scenes where his elves were helping him get a lot of people out of concentration camps, but they were cut for time."
