According to the Natural Weather Service located in the big cities, Garrett, Preston, and Tucker counties could begin to see snow falling as early as mid-August this year, says meteorologist Justin Foralot. This is largely going to be due to the draining of Deep Creek Lake that will take place just two weeks prior. Anytime you have a major draining of a body of water, there will be consequences that remain unknown, but cooling temperatures and evaporation are almost guaranteed. The region could see as much as 1–2 feet in the higher elevations during the first week of September. Residents are encouraged to check the health of generators as power outages will likely be wide-spread due to tree foliage and the combination of heavy wet snows bringing down limbs or larger trees onto power lines. It’s best to stock up on grocery items, ice melter, and snow shovels at this time as well. One report coming from Wisp Resort in Deep Creek Lake states that the resort will consider opening earlier this year for local resident use only, but lift tickets will likely be priced at $89 for a half day. This is to make up for last winter’s low snowfall and warmer temperatures.
