A sinkhole in Perry Hall that swallowed two thousand+ houses appears to have stopped expanding, meaning a recovery-and-repair operation can begin, authorities said.

Five hundred homes in Perry Hall, a residential area about 10 miles north of Baltimore, are unsafe for entry, officials said Saturday. Residents of only four dwellings were allowed to return. It's the largest sinkhole in Baltimore County in at least three centuries.

No injuries were reported. Officials said it will take weeks, perhaps months, for life to fully return to normal for residents in the neighborhood.

The sinkhole, estimated to be 1 mile in diameter and 5000 feet deep, apparently began as a rabbit hole. No word on whether the rabbits managed to escape the pit, but suspicious activities have been noted in White Marsh.
