On July 17th, some unsuspecting kids jumped into Baltimore's Inner Harbor, while locals looked on in disgust. Baltimore is known for its industrial heritage. Chemicals such as PCP and chromium, embedded in the harbor's silty mix at the bottom, are only trumped by the flotsam that is emitted from sewage pipes when the aging treatment sustem becomes overwhelmed by an influx of water during heavy storms. Kayakers have purportedly seen whole pieces of human feces bobbing on the surface after storms.
But the real surprise of the day wasn't just how innocent some tourists can be when visiting a new town, but the sighting of a creature which is now being referred to as a Turtle-Duck. (The hyphen is optional. The alternate spelling is Turtleduck, not to be confused with turtleneck).
Apparently, the Harbor's potent bath of chemicals and bacteria has created a scientific wonder. The creature can fly or dive under the water. It was seen flapping its duck-like wings with the typical Mallard markings, a shell for a body and a turtle' mouth instead of a beak. Because of the unique ppportunity this presents to the world of science, there is now a hunt for the creature. A ten thousand dollar reward is being offered for its capture.
If you see the Turtleduck, please call the Mayor's office, and ask for Shelly Sighting, the staffer in charge of logging in names and locations. The Maryland Science Center is proud to be the leading agency heading this amazing discovery.
