NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Associated Press) - Lawmakers in Tennessee have successfully passed a bill that will change when police officers are paid overtime. The new regulations specify that law enforcement will now being earning overtime when they work 98 (Ninety-Eight) hours in a two week period.

The bills sponsor, Rep. Scott DesJarlais, whose district covers suburban Rutherford County, along with rural areas of Middle Tennessee, stated the bill is needed to help municipalities maintain budgets and hire additional personnel.

"Many of these counties and cities have officers working full time, then have to pay those same officers for court appearances" stated DesJarlais. "We just can't have that amount of government workers making "time & a half" just standing around in a court room"

Rep. Marsha Blackburn of suburban Williamson County, who was also in support of this bill stated " It is important to save money where we can. Those additional funds can be used to hire additional staff to better serve the community. As I understand it, most officers have additional training on off days as well as call-in during large emergency events. It is just budget crushing"

Many police officers and sheriff deputies were against the bills passage, stating the additional pay was fair compensation for working those numbers of hours. "We should have a normal work week just like everyone else. If we work extra, we should get paided extra" said one Metro-Nashville police officers who wish not to be identified. "We want to earn a fair wage too"

The law will go into effect on January 1st, 2018.
