A 10-foot (3m) Great White Shark made its way nearly 100km inland in the Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia. Initially spotted by a kayaker, a response team from Shubenacadie Wildlife Park worked with DFO late into the evening last night to tag and return the shark to the Bay of Fundy. Sasha Leblanc, biologist with the Huntsman Marine Science Institute, spoke with reporters early this morning. "This is an increasingly common occurrence. The Bay of Fundy, with its rich sources of prey, is seeing an explosion of shark sightings. Unusually high temperatures this summer are enticing them deeper into the Bay of Fundy and the powerful tidal bore can draw them into local rivers. Sharks can survive for days in the brackish river water, feasting on wildlife such as bass, deer and otters. Though they often return to the Bay of Fundy on their own accord, the size of this shark, and the fact that if made its way so far inland, is a concerning occurrence, and may just be the first of many such incidents." Further statements and public warnings from the Coast Guard and DFO are expected later today.
