It was announced today in a press conference at the state capitol building, that Catawba has been chosen as the location of the nations newest nuclear power plant. The location currently known as Catawba Game Land will make way to a state of the art power plant. In July 2015 the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission removed the Catawba Game Land from its Game Land Program at the request of the owner, Crescent Resources. This change removed 913 acres from the Game Land Program and is now the perfect candidate to aid in the nations first experimental steady flow cooling system that will keep the facility running at an estimated three times the production of any other plant in the world. The area runs more than 200 miles in North Carolina and South Carolina along the banks of the Catawba-Wateree River, which is managed by Duke Energy through a license issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. FERC recently granted Duke Energy a 40-year license to continue operating 13 hydroelectric stations and 11 reservoirs and develop this new nuclear flow cooling system . Some stakeholders say the license doesn’t go far enough in protecting water quality and the environment. Duke Energy also wants to do more under the license, and has asked FERC for an additional 10 years. State and area officials alike are excited and optimistic about the venture as it will add hundreds of jobs to the small suburb towns. Construction is slated to begin in the spring 2018.
