Stafford, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Lions back in 2009. He’s in the final year of his five-year, $76.5 million contract. This comes as a shock to all the Lions fans.

Detroit Lions 'like what we see' with rookie QB Brad Kaaya. Brad Kaaya was determined to make himself a better quarterback at Miami (Fla.), so after every practice he sat down to watch film and take notes on things he needed to correct the next day.

Kaaya, a sixth-round pick by the Detroit Lions in April's draft, has continued that habit in the pros, and the quarterback has done a good enough job with his daily points of emphasis to impress the people who drafted him.

"It’s a difficult position to play," Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. "It’s not one where you come in and you’re going to be lights out. Not in our system because of the fact that we haven’t necessarily dumbed it down and it’s complex. There’s a lot of growth to it. There’s a lot of ground to cover within it, but I do think that he has all of the things that you’re looking for. He has the temperament. He has the intellect. He has the drive and desire. He has the personality for it. He also has the arm talent, so he has all those things in place."
