Lake Erie has its own version of "Nessie" and "Champ", experts say.

Scientists from the DCNR, Erie Zoo and Lake Erie Zoological Society were called early yesterday morning to a sighting of a mysterious creature just off Geneva-on-the-Lake. Witnesses insist it is a heretofore unknown creature, possibly of prehistoric origins.

Unlike descriptions of Nessie and Champ which have varied from undulating serpent-like humps to a long neck, the Lake Erie creature has been described as having a dinosaur-like head with plates on its back and flippers for arms.

"It looked kind of like a cross between Godzilla and a great white shark," said one man, who asked to remain anonymous.

So far, scientists are baffled by what the creature might have been or what the witnesses may have seen. As this is the first, at least recorded, sighting, they didn't have any way of even referring to it. Local residents, however, have dubbed the creature...what else?...Niagara, after the lake's famous flagship and the waterfall the lake feeds.
