This week, USGS has been collecting information in the Southern California area. The results are unfortunate for those living in the cities of Irvine and Costa Mesa. Based on analyses and scans, a new, dangerous, fault line has been discovered right below these very populated cities. The fault poses a serious risk, as it is very close to the surface and is apparently one of the strongest parts of the San Andreas fault. Seismologists were drawn to this area due to hundreds of micro-quakes occurring in the past month, beginning on August 21st. It is unknown if these could be signs of an impending large quake, but the chances are likely. Dr. Lucy Jones of the USGS claims it is "imperative" that citizens in this area take action, and that the soil under these cities is very loose. "Soil in the region lacks compact, and loose soil was one of the factors that made the recent deadly earthquake in Puebla, Mexico so lethal, as the soil should be absorbing most of the shock, but when it is loose, it goes right through and up to the ground, wreaking havoc". The seismologists concluded that this area is more overdue than ever for a large release in stress, that should have been released about 250 years ago. Costa Mesa and Irvine officials are immediately responding to these findings and are hiring 100 new engineers and construction officers to help create new, stricter building codes to keep citizens safe. A press conference to alert the public is expected by Costa Mesa's Mayor, Katrina Foley, in the next week.
