FRANKLIN, N.C. (WTVD) -- Bob Scott has had decades of public service. He was in the Army as a public affairs officer and flew in the Civil Air Patrol. He also spent ten years on the Franklin Board of Aldermen and is now serving his second term as mayor of Franklin NC.
Scott's most recent challenge comes in the eight-legged form. North American Silk, Inc. opened their first spawning facility near Franklin this summer. It did not take long for the community to hear what this quiet business was doing in their small location along the scenic Wayah Road. Not a stone's throw from the LBJ Job Corps center are an estimated 20-30 million spider larvae waiting to hatch.
Scott states, "Community growth depends on business growth. Silk manufacturing has the potential to bring jobs and growth to our region." Scott along with many leaders of the community are embracing a company which will maintain as many as 20 million adult spiders in one location, hatesting their silk for both the fabric and fiber industries.
Both company officials and town leadership are excited about the possibilities. Stan Lee Parker, CEO of North American Silk says estimates of first year production are promising. Once the spiders reach adulthood, they create silk. The unspun silk transforms from a gel into a final solid fiber as it is pulled through the spider's acidic silk glands, called the spinneret glands. Spiders can have two to eight spinnerets, which are usually in pairs, depending on the species.
Silk is extremely strong and versatile. Once launched, spider farming could place Franklin at the center of this arachnid industry, securing the city's economic future and introducing Western North Carolina to a form of economic revitalization that in some ways seem fitting. The natural beauty of the region paired with the natural value of the spun silk of the spider. Mother Nature at its elegant best. Let's just hope they don't get out.
