Papa Johns Boycotters clash with Papa Johns Supporters over Who Loves National Anthem More

Major NFL sponsor Papa Johns Pizza has experienced a recent drop in sales. On Wednesday, founder and CEO John Schnatter blamed NFL players who drop to their knees in protest during the National Anthem.
In response, a group of football fans and pizza enthusiasts have started Pizza for Patriots. The group vows to eat Papa Johns at least 3 days a week to show support for Schnatter and his pro-anthem views. Pizza for Patriots member Gordon Daniels said, “We are even declining our rewards points. We must pay full price for these pizzas to bring about real change.”
Meanwhile, Boycott All Sponsors, or BAS, is another pro-anthem movement gaining momentum. BAS co-founder Gina Hatchner said, “We firmly believe the NFL will not get serious about requiring players to stand until it starts affecting profits. When you boycott a big sponsor like Papa Johns, it sends a powerful message.”
Despite their shared support of standing for the anthem, the two groups differing methods is proving problematic.
Enthusiastic groups from both organizations turned out at Metlife Stadium for the Thursday night game between the Bills and Jets. Both groups respectfully stood for nearly an hour as they blasted various renditions of the anthem from truck-mounted speakers. But then the mood changed.
Brandishing t-shirts and signs, the two groups began to exchange insults. Shouts of “Love your anthem and hate your anchovies” were met with shouts of “Passing pizza proves patriotism.”
The turning point seemed to come when a Pizza for Patriots member started tossing pepperonis like Frisbees at the BAS tent.
Stadium security responded quickly and got the situation under control by inviting both groups to sing America the Beautiful.
Asked about the situation, Papa Johns employee Ray Thurmond said, “They may be patriots, but they are lousy tippers. I just delivered 40 larges, and the tip was five bucks. With the crap wages we make, this delivery will barely cover gas money.”
