The Mta decided to continue the project that was stopped in 1949 to expand the A train to Cunningham Park. The Mta said that they now have the money and workers to finish the project in less than a year. The line was originally proposed to be served as a shuttle in 1937 but the line was then canceled due to high payment of the line in which the Mta could not afford. The tracks and stations between Cunningham Park and Myrtle Avenue have been already built. But the Mta has decided to put minor modifications on the tracks and some of these stations, clean them up, and place the signs for the stations that were already built. However they will try to make a more modern looking station in the elevated 95th Avenue station and connect the Ozone Park Lefferts Blvd station and the Myrtle Avenue station so it can be served by the A line. The Mta will only make the Myrtle Avenue and Beverly Road station an open cut which would be just like the Brighton Line served by the B and Q trains. Once a Cunningham Park bound A train leaves Beverly Rd it would immediately go into a underground tunnel while the Inwood 207st bound A train would go out of the tunnel that is underground and enter the station. The Van Wyck Expy station will remain an underground station and allow commuters a transfer to the E and F lines. A Cunningham Park bound train would then continue running underground and then come out of the tunnel and soon entering the Smedley St station while the Inwood 207st bound A train would soon go underground once it leaves the Smedly St station. The Smedley St,164 St,and Croydon Rd, and Cunningham Park stations will continue being an embankment(slightly elevated and running on terrain) and the Surrey Pl station would a regular elevated station over a street. The Mta wants to put more cars to the A line due to the expansion with the r160s(some of the newer trains). Although the Mta won’t really modify most of the new stations on the A line like the 2nd Avenue line, it will start putting the newest r179 cars on the A line starting in 2020-2021. This project would reduce crowds in stations and allow commuters to travel further into Queens. The Mta chairman,Joseph J. Lhota, said that the Mta is expected to finish the project by December 20,2018.
