Tanaka Chigwende has announced that he has accepted a developmental deal from the Orlando Magic, the 22 year old Zimbabwe Australian is a 6ft2 180lbs point guard from Australia. Whilst Tanaka is only 6ft2 he makes up for his lack of height with his large 6ft8 wingspan, which he has used to play elite defence and demonstrate outstanding rebounding instincts for a point guard.

Tanaka has spent his last few seasons in Australia playing rep basketball for the Western Sydney Razorbacks where the young guard has put up enormous numbers and has led the Razorbacks to two state league championships. The young guard put up scoring averages of 28.9 and 34.4 points per game in respective seasons for the razorbacks. In addition to this Tanaka has averaged 13.4 rebounds a game, along with 5.4 steals and 8 assists per game in his last season for the Razorbacks.

Orlando magic head scout Stan Edwards scouted Tanaka during his State league finals and witnessed Tanaka put up 52 points, 19 rebounds, 7 steals, 5 blocks and 8 assists in his state league final whilst leading them to the Championship. Stan Edwards stated the following about Tanaka “ Tanaka is an unbelievable Athlete, who possesses a 38inch vertical, mixed with a 6ft8 wingspan and unbelievable scoring and defensive instincts.

Nba scout Rick Overton stated the following “ whilst Tanaka is already 22 years old and hasn’t played college ball, he has really emerged out of the blue and has definitely been a late bloomer at the age of 22. However he has shown enough ability and potential to become a solid role player or starter in the NBA.

Our interview with Tanaka has revealed that Tanaka has remained very quiet about his unbelievable basketball resume at the rep level and he has also chosen to fly under the radar with much of his training and workouts. Tanaka stated the following “ I have remained very quiet about my training and basketball resume at the rep level, prefer to workout out on my own, without any distractions. I also feel that if I attracted any more unneeded attention there would be a lot of people who want to see me fail. Thus I have been training mostly in secret to ensure that nobody can bring me down, I tend to lay low and act as if I’m not striving for greatness, but now that I have made it to the Orlando Magic developmental team, I plan on achieving levels that no one ever thought I was capable of. I understand that I am a massive underdog, but that’s the person I want to be, and then I can prove everyone wrong”.

The Orlando Magic are currently seeking a new point guard after trading Eldrid Payton and Orlando Magic scouts believe that Tanaka can be next in line it does well in the NBA Las Vegas and Orlando summer league. Nba scout Mike Alfred stated the following about Tanaka “ he has a smooth Jump shot and whilst he isn’t the best 3 point shooter, he is a strong right hand driver and can also make left handed layups. In addition to this Tanaka can dunk at a high level and can occasionally dunk off the alley when he is feeling pumped up enough. Most importantly it’s his scoring and defensive potential, mixed with his long wingspan which makes him such a valuable commodity to the Orlando Magic, which is why we can’t wait to see him play in the NBA summer league”.

We like to wish Tanaka Chigwende the very best in his future and we hope that his NBA career is a long, healthy and successful one. Tanaka will officially fly over to Orlando on June 30th to begin his journey in the NBA.
