A 41 year old man from Coodanup has eaten his own dog to prevent starvation after becoming lost in the Lane Poole Reserve in Dwellingup.
The man called triple zero on Saturday evening at about 7:15 pm on April 13 and stated that he was lost while attempting to travel to Tony's Bend campground, which is located within Lane Poole Reserve. Dwellingup Police launched a search for the man, with the assistance of Pinjarra Police and Police Air Wing.
The man was finally spotted about 11.40pm the next day by the police helicopter, but not before he had killed his dog and eaten it to prevent alleged starvation. The man was apparently inconsolable, and blamed police for the delayed rescue.
"I had to eat my best friend," the man stated, wishing to remain anonymous. "I've been here all night. I had no choice. I thought I was going to die."
A WA police spokeswoman said the duo were difficult to locate because the man had taken a wrong turn down a dirt track that was not in the direction of Tony's Bend campground.
The man's car had also became bogged during the ordeal.
Responding officers were said to be devastated by the man's actions towards his pet, and were incredulous about the necessity of his actions.
"He was lost for slightly over 24 hours. Clearly there was more time available for the man to consider other options, or wait for rescue."
