For the first time since Chesterfield County’s inception, the county’s children will no longer receive a treat as a response to the age old question "Trick or Treat?" on Halloween. Citing an increase in allergies, diabetes, obesity and other health-related issues, the county Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance late last week preventing people from handing out treats on Halloween. According to the ordinance, houses that hand out candy or other treats on October 31st will be subject to a $250 fine.

"We were elected to look after the well-being of our citizens," said Midlothian Supervisor Haley Leslie, "The sole purpose of Halloween is to get as many treats as possible. This doesn't live up to our commitment to provide a healthy, safe community for our residents. Parents spend a lot of money every year at the dentist and doctor. Ultimately, we are trying to help them save some money. Parents spend so much money on their kids anyway that they deserve a break sometimes. I used to spend thousands of dollars every year on my son because he played a travel sport. I would have appreciated being able to save a little money at the doctor and dentist."

Not everyone agreed with the Board's decision. "Let them be kids," said Henrico resident Sally Johnson, "A few weeks of excessive candy eating will not determine the health of a person. You have to look at all of their food choices, not just what they are choosing to eat after Halloween. I am glad my kids and I don’t live in Chesterfield."

County residents are planning a protest to ask the Board to reconsider their decision, however, the next Board meeting is scheduled to take place on November 15th.
