Arizona Schools to Repeat Spring 2020 Due to Early Closures

Arizona Governor Ducey and the Arizona Department of Education have decided all students effected by the early closures will need to repeat the spring 2020 school year. All Arizona schools have closed prematurely due to the pandemic covid19 virus. "Education is important for our children. We cannot shortchange them the opportunities for learning" said Gov. Ducey. Gov. Ducey continued stating, "We continue to innovate and improve the quality of our education system. Canceling the Spring semesters was a tough decision, done for the safety of our communities and to stop the spread of this virus. However, our children need their education." Kathy Hoffman, Superintendent for Arizona Department of Education stated, "After thorough talks and debate with our leadership, we have ultimately determined our children will need to repeat the Spring 2020 semesters." She later continued stating, "many schools have elected to online formats, however, the Arizona Department of Education does not recognize this online learning format, nor deem it sufficient to replace what was lost this semester." Most schools converted to online learning have not been accredited for the online learning format and will not be recognized for continuation into the next school year. "We cannot accept the continuation in grades from those schools choosing an online format for which they are not accredited for" stated Sup. Hoffman.
This is a huge loss and heartache for our children. One that our Arizona leadership has not taken lightly.
