The 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair ended 55 years ago. However some remnants still are existent: in Flushing Meadows, New York the unmistakable Unisphere still sits where it once was in ‘64, and the New York State pavilion still stands to this day albeit in a less than desirable state. A few other remnants are still around, however, with regard to the fair.
At Disneyland in California, the It’s a Small World attraction from the Pepsi-Cola pavilion still operates to this day, and the dinosaurs from the Ford Magic Skyway can be found in the Disneyland Railroad’s primeval world diorama. At the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, a clone of the original Small World attraction operates in the Fantasyland section of the Magic Kingdom theme park. In the Tomorrowland section however, there resides the second oldest attraction in the park: Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. One man is even lucky enough to have some props from the original show.
Meet 35 year old John Johnson, a resident of Manhattan. He recently bought a house and discovered some treasures left behind by the original owner. “I bought the house just 6 weeks ago and decided to move some stuff from the basement just yesterday, and I find this box sitting in a corner. I open it up and I see various things and I had no idea what they went to.” He says. “I ask my wife if this was something of hers, and she had no idea either.” That’s when Johnson took to the internet. “I see something that says “Goodyear Speedramp” and I have no idea what that is. I turn to google, and it’s an escalator. But I had no idea what the rest of these were from. I see a large patch of fabric, a GE emblem, various letters for a sign, and then something that said “Walt Disney”.
A search for “Walt Disney and GE” turned up something he was familiar with. ““Carousel of Progress” and I said to myself “Well gosh! I know what that is! You sit in the theater and you move around stages while learning about electricity through the years.” That was his reaction it all of this. But it didn’t stop there.
“I see an old vacuum cleaner sitting in an upstairs closet, and I had no idea what it was doing here, but I look at pictures of the original General Electric Carousel of Progress, and I say “That must be the same vacuum!”” But it was hard to tell. “I look up the history, and the ride was moved to Disneyland after the fair which meant they took all the props. But I couldn’t pin point if that was another vacuum with a different serial number, a different model, or the same one. I know the Florida version uses a different cleaner, so who knows what this is.” Johnson said. With no way of knowing, Johnson assumed he was lucky. “I like to think that this vacuum is the same one from the fair.” He said.
We tracked down the previous owner of the house, 75 year old Mike Brown, now a resident of Utica, New York. “I remember clearly how it happened. I was able to salvage a piece from one of the chairs during the last day of the fair. The rest for the most part I got because I knew people who worked at the local dump. They saved me a few pieces. The vacuum I’m not sure how I got it. I think one of my friends knew a guy who knew some other guy who knew Walt Disney.” He said. The rest is history as he says.
The Walt Disney Company was reached for a comment but they did not return a request in time.
