With the Gallagher premiership underway, Gloucester are hoping for a strong start to leave their post lockdown performances behind. With the departure of Danny Cipriani came new signings. This hasn’t stopped the introduction of the cherry and white’s youth with the likes of George Barton, Josh Gray and Jack Clement receiving numerous occasions to show their talent. An unexpected addition to the first team is Sonjal Rai (centre) who is expected to make his debut when the new year begins. He is joined by fellow teammate, and school friend, Samuel Loftus (hooker) who is joining with the squad to gain experience. Sonjal Rai is not a new face to the first team as he was drip fed into the squad prior to lockdown and his hard work seems to have paid off with head coach George Skivington describing the player as “ an exciting prospect, he has a lot to offer and we are hoping to get the best out of him as he isn’t aware of his potential. He has the skill set of a professional and he brings a lot of physicality for a guy who’s about to do his GCSE’s!”.

Sonjal described his opportunity as being “A dream come true”. He told ESPN reporters, “ I’m taking this opportunity with a fixed head, I know nothing is guaranteed and just hoping to learn as much as I can with this opportunity and if I get to run out there it’ll be from hard work and patience”.

The inside centre recovered from a serious Knee injury earlier this year, but his performance back from the doctors office suggested he hasn’t lost his flair. Sonjal tan in for a hat trick of tries and assisted two. He gained 19 points in total in a 27-8 win for the u15’s.
