Much to the surprise of most, the Showgirls brand was revisited in 2011 by actress Rena Riffel in an exaggerated straight-to-DVD satire "Showgirls 2: Pennies From Heaven". Since then, Showgirls has also found its voice on stage. In addition to drag queens reproducing their favorite characters in night clubs across the globe, it's also been interpreted for the wildly successful "Showgirls! The Musical!" Not too shabby for a film critically panned to shame in 1995.

More than 20 years later, Boston based independent screenwriter Mike Monahan has been tapped by Darren Star (Sex and the City, Beverly Hills 90210) to re-open the can of worms many initially thought would've remained sealed forever.

"The parodies have been cute," Monahan says, smiling coyly. "I'm really glad the film sort of.. took on a new life in a cult sense and consistently, for so long. It is a pleasant surprise." Despite his enjoyment of the path the film has taken over the course of two decades, there's a sense of seriousness from the 31 year old writer. The trailer for the 1995 box office bomb teases "The last time they took you to the edge, this time they're taking you all the way" and Monahan insists that theme will ring true in his television reboot: "All the way and back again," He grins, sipping on an especially dark Starbucks black iced coffee.

"I'd really like to dig deep into the morals, or lack thereof, in the characters. What I want out of this show is that same darkness that the movie originally brought to the table. I want to go back to that raw, seedy kind of vibe."

Does this mean the FCC will have to endure a new 'TV-NC17' rating as the original film did?

"Ummm," Mike clenches his teeth. "We are working with Bravo on that. It's been a bit of a bumpier road than we anticipated in that regard, but the network is grateful for the lack of nudity versus the film."

But what's a Showgirls TV show without nudity?

"I guess you'll have to wait and see," Monahan smirks. "It's going to be a wild ride."

The Showgirls television series is casting now and tentatively slated for a summer 2017 premiere on Bravo.
