FLEMING-NEON, Ky. - James Edward Absher never considers himself "off-duty," but officials in Letcher County said he went above and beyond during a rescue Friday. Nancy Ballard said her mother Dorothy Hicks, 77, fell near a creek bed while walking her dog. When she fell, a T-bar impaled her.

Absher, a volunteer firefighter and EMT, received the page and responded to the scene.

"I held her," said Absher. "I had to dig down in the creek and keep her body weight so it didn't make the injury worse than it already was."

Ballard said, if no one was there to help her mother, she believes she would have died.

"She would have bled to death," said Ballard. "She would have really bled. And she was hanging upside down. Her left leg was behind her back. But she had no broken bones. I'm grateful for every one of (those who helped.) Every single one of them."

Absher said, he would like to think he would help anyone in need, whether he was on duty or not.

"I think of it as, if I needed help, I would really hope someone would come help me. So I put myself in other people's shoes - and if I can help, I do it."
