An El Paso Community College student was being tested Monday for a deadly new coronavirus that has sparked health fears around the world, university officials said Tuesday.
The 19-year-old student, who lives in East El Paso, had traveled to Wuhan, China, where the virus is believed to have originated, during the winter vacation. He is isolated at home, said El Paso County Health District officials, who declined to identify him.
If the case is confirmed, the health officials said they would promptly announce it.
?(Health district) officials have described the immediate health risk to the campus community as high,” El Paso Community College President William Serata said in a statement.
Classes have continued as scheduled. However, all campuses will be closed down if the infected student dies.
The student’s symptoms appear not to be improving, said Dr. Eric Wilke of the El Paso Health Authority. The man has been put on treatment, Wilke said.
“It’s unfortunate that he had symptoms,” Wilke said. "He's not doing so good."
His case was identified at a local emergency room, said Wilke, who declined to identify the hospital.
