As you already know the country band "The Dixie Chicks" recently announced they would be dropping "Dixie" from their band name as it raised connotations of the Southern United States that seceded in 1860 to become the Confederate States of America. Given the anti-racism protests sweeping the globe, especially in the U.S. , the band felt it appropriate to change its name at that time and became known simply as "The Chicks". Now objections have been raised about the term "Chicks" as though not necessarily a derogatory term, many women find it offensive because of its flippant nature ( i.e.- "she's a great looking chick"). Band member, Martie Maguire, stated that in response to the concerns raised that the term could be hurtful to a group of people the band would be dropping " Chicks" from the band name as well and that they would now be known going forward as "The". No word yet on what the other adverbs think of this singling out of one of their own.
