Police are asking for assistance to locate men in association with alleged Harness Racing Fixing syndicate
It is alleged the syndicate contracted drivers to drive their horses in a manner detrimental to their chances over an extended period. It is alleged the men began grooming drivers with unspecified sums of cash and gifts in December 2017.
One of the men who’s name has been suppressed allegedly posted several results of racing outcomes on social media which had alerted Racing Authorities.
The men would often “Lay” (back to lose) a well favoured horse pre race with the knowledge the horse would he driven negatively. Betfair Australia allows a punter to “Back” a horse to lose.
The head of Harness Racing NSW, John Dumnesy, said the response and cooperation by Betfair Australia had been ”extremely poor”, and calls for more powers to be held by racing stewards and Police in regards to regulation and betting enquiries.
On Friday Feb 5 Police allege the men offered “Jackson Painting” $2000 to drive his horse “Coolhand Easton” negatively. Jackson subsequently refused and reported the matter to Albury Race Stewards.
Investigations are continuing.
