The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has instilled a ban on ALLl snakes (both domestic and wild), to be kept as personal pets or for breeding purposes. This ban will take effect on November 1, 2016. Anyone violating this ban will be subject to a $10,000.00 fine or 1 year in jail. The ban is a result of pet owners releasing their snakes in the outdoors and endangering the public and also overpopulation due to overbreeding of snakes. In order to keep any snake as a household pet after November 1st, a person may apply for a special "holding permit" with a cost of $1000.00 per snake. This ban does not affect licensed retailer's and wholesalers.
