Corona Del Mar, Calif-- In a special meeting of Corona Del Mar’s City Council, leaders Thursday passed a special resolution to change the name of the town due to negative associations with the word “Corona” and the COVID-19 pandemic. The vote was a result of a citizen petition and special investigative committee evaluating impacts to the reputation of the community and negative implications for business, tourism, and restaurant trade. “In particular, we were concerned about the potential for the discouragement of visitors to CDM.”, said Jessica Mitford, chair of the investigative committee- “Who wants to visit a town named after a disease?” The committee was also tasked with finding good alternatives to the Corona Del Mar name, a task made more difficult because “Del Mar” was a name already taken by a town further south. Negotiations with that city for a mutually beneficial resolution failed, so the committee pursued renaming opportunities. “We considered Rey Del Mar (‘King of the Sea’) but dropped it because of Marina Del Rey and also because we were concerned about gendering our town. Then we realized we really wanted to preserve our ‘CDM’ acronym.” After considering ‘Cruz Del Mar’, Cuchillo Del Mar’ and ‘Corazon Del Mar’, the committee officially recommended ‘Cumbres Del Mar’, evoking the beautiful hills overlooking the sea in this part of Orange County.
After the passing vote, renaming activities will commence immediately. City workers will have until Jan. 1 to revise street signs and town logos, while businesses will have extra time- until Jan. 15- to rename their businesses, update their websites, etc. The lone dissenter on the city council represented those citizens reluctant to change the name of their hometown. “This is stupid.”, said Don Karateka, an ex-policeman and current small business owner along Pacific Coast Highway.
The Inland Empire city of Corona is reportedly considering similar action, as is the popular beer brand, but neither have announced any imminent changes.
