Is Joseph Kalimbwe the most influential under 30 in SADC ?

Since his party won the election in August 2021, Joseph Kalimbwe, seen as a President Hakainde Hichilema ally has become a very popular political figure in the SADC region under the age of 30. But is he the most influential youth under 30 in SADC ?

Kalimbwe, an Information and Publicity secretary at Zambia's ruling party has too often influenced debate on Social Media. Last week, he condemned the DRC for mistreating SADC citizens, particularly truck drivers saying "Congolese kids come to get free education in Zambia". What followed was a huge social media storm from French Twitter in DRC where others thought he was spreading a xenophobia conversation on a country of war, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A day later, he spoke of how the Minister of youths in Namibia is above age. Tweeting "Namibia's youth minister if 76. You read right, 76". Others including Malawi's Human rights commission chairperson claimed Kalimbwe must understand his influence and stop airing certain views in public. But Kalimbwe stood by his views claiming "we must have a balance in our African politics". Kalimbwe is not new to Namibia, he was student union president there and is widely popular among young people.

In South Africa, they call him an anti xenophobic after he criticized South Africa's involvement in the Ukraine- Russia conflict saying SADC nations must stay away because "this is a war not an amapiano dance competition". South Africans have always criticized Kalimbwe after Zambia reportedly deported 436 African nationals last month claiming he did not speak out.

In Zimbabwe Kalimbwe is widely known for his support of his friend, Nelson Chamisa, whom he claims was very supportive of his boss, Hakainde Hichilema. As a result, Kalimbwe has clashed with several ZanuPF ministers over his support for Chamisa.

In his native Zambia, Kalimbwe this week claimed his country must apologise to Kenneth Kaunda "even in his death". This follows a 1999 standoff between late leaders Frederick Chiluba and Kenneth Kaunda who was stripped of his citizenship. Yesterday, he claimed Hakainde is the best man currently leading Zambia before going on to claim previous Zambian Presidents treated other tribes in his country like "step kids".

Whatever you think of the young politician, his influence in SADC is undeniable. He drives conversations from his social media and those in power respond.
