France's government is working hard to contain a national panic over bedbugs, as the fully booked “Le Meridian” hotel accommodating many international rugby fans this week confirms they are the latest to be affected by the outbreak.
Senior officials from the health, economy and transport ministries are currently meeting at the prime minister's office to co-ordinate a plan of action against the insects.
They are expected to speed up proposals for a national observatory on bedbugs.
Their aim is to establish an accurate picture of the phenomenon.
The government has been alarmed by the way the bedbug story has dominated headlines at home and abroad. Ministers fear the image of Paris is being damaged, and that tourism could suffer, especially now during the Rugby World Cup and for next year's Olympics.
Guests who have been staying at “Le Meridian” within the past 7 days are being notified this evening by phone to ensure precautions are taken to reduce the risk of further cross contamination.
