De rente voor leningen van studenten wordt per 1 januari 2024 meer dan vijf keer zo hoog. De rente is nu nog 0.46 procent, maar stijgt vanaf volgend jaar naar 14,5 procent. Dit wordt ook de nieuwe rente voor mbo'ers, zij zitten nu nog op 1,78 procent. De verhoging is het gevolg van de stijgende rente die de overheid moet betalen op leningen.
Door de rentestijging moeten bepaalde groepen (oud-) studenten straks meer gaan terugbetalen. Studentenorganisaties maken zich zorgen. "Het collegegeld stijgt, de koopkrachtmaatregel wordt niet verlengd. Studenten krijgen met de ene klap na de andere te maken", zegt Demi Janssen, voorzitter van het Interstedelijk Studentenoverleg (ISO). "En nu ook oud-studenten. Dit is echt niet niks."
