An army spokesperson confirmed that plans are afoot to re-constitute the organisation which was originally formed in WW2 for the defence of the UK mainland.
The current idea was the brainchild of a serving army reserve officer. Plans are still ongoing but a few basics are already in place. Any British citizen between the age of 18 and 65 will be eligible to join, it will be unpaid and strictly voluntary, but still operate under Queens regulations, service will only be on the UK mainland. Fitness requirements will be minimal in comparison to the army reserve and regulars.
It is expected that units will be very local to their communities, utilising current army cadet facilities to train on weeknights, with local army reserve centres used for more demanding training.
"We envisage the training to be less intense than normal, and based around small unit tactics for lightly armed infantry who operate primarily in their local area " the spokesperson stated. It is hoped that a by product of the idea will be to build a bond between the civilian and military community due to the locality of the units, as well as creating a unit where ex military will be able to use their skills without the demands which the normal reserve or regular forces put on personal life.
The formation should be in place by early 2017.
