The GOP's tax bill passed last night includes calling for a "sunshine tax". In hand written notes on page 332 of the nearly 500 page bill there are notes calling for residents of sunshine belt states to face additional taxes of 1-3.5 of annual income. These new taxes would be used to offset the cost of coal mining to make that source of power competitive with cleaner energy technologies found in warmer climates. Democratic Senators have called this an outright gift of taxpayer dollars to the coal mining companies in an effort for Trump to make good on his promise to bring back coal jobs.
