With a shrinking tax base the small town of Salena Ohio is struggling to cover the cost of upkeep. Roads have gone unrepaired for far too long, municipal buildings are falling into disrepair.
With families leaving due to job shortages the tax base is shrinking. The town has been looking for innovative ways to raise the needed funds. According to David Harris the man in charge of tax collections they have come up with one that not many are happy with. Starting November 1st all dog licenses renewal fees will be based on the dogs weight.
The town has done away with lifetime fees and going with a yearly fee only. The one concession the town is making is there will be a $25 cap. The town believes the money raised will be enough to cover repair costs on two of their public works buildings.
Citizens have threatened to sue feeling they are being unfairly burdened. A dog owner faction within the town is pushing to have all pets licensed to spread the costs more fairly. The k9 owners say the fight isn't over yet.
