Nintendo Is Getting Rid Of Nintendo 3ds/2ds/WII U By The End Of 2022

In spite of the rising popularity of portable devices such as phones and tablets, Nintendo is reportedly getting rid of their Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS products. As a matter of fact, the Japanese video game company said that they are getting rid of it by the end of 2022.

According to Kotaku, the end of 2022 is when Nintendo will be totally retiring their Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS products. The decision to get rid of their devices comes about two years before the next iteration of Nintendo Switch.

Previously, Nintendo has supported their Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS consoles for seven and six years, respectively, according to Engadget. On the other hand, the Switch arrived two years and three months after their debut of Nintendo 3DS in 2011.

GameSpot reported that Nintendo previously made plans to phase out the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS sometime by 2022. However, Nintendo never made an official statement regarding this announcement.

According to Engadget, the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS used the respective NFC functionality to allow Switch players to transfer their Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS games. This suggests that the company is "rethinking its approach to backward compatibility," as the device is essentially a new and improved version of the Wii U and Wii.

The company reportedly will be launching a replacement for the Nintendo 3DS by the beginning of 2023. This is the Nintendo NX, which is also rumored to be a portable gaming device. As stated by Forbes, while Nintendo is getting rid of its outdated and weak Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS, it is actually looking to make it much stronger by introducing the Nintendo NX.

Meanwhile, The Verge reported that Nintendo Switch is now Nintendo's most successful console in the history of video games. The Japanese video game company had not seen a hardware gain in market share and sales since the launch of Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube back in the early-to-mid-90s.

The Japanese video game company saw a record $919.9 million for the Nintendo Switch this fiscal year. This is an amazing 25 percent increase from the $713.7 million it had made in the previous fiscal year. Furthermore, this is also an incredible 14 percent increase from last year.
